What Are the Most Energy Efficient Light Bulbs?

The types of light bulbs that you choose for your home or business matters more than you think. Not only do different light bulbs vary in the quality of the light that they provide, but they have a big impact on your energy usage as well.

More energy efficient light bulbs and lighting solutions not only help reduce your energy costs (as well as your impact on the environment), but they also typically last longer, which means you’ll end up spending less on having to replace them.

The following are some of the most energy efficient light bulbs on the market that you should consider using.

Halogen Incandescent Light Bulbs

Halogen incandescent light bulbs contain a small capsule inside of their bulbs that hold gas around a filament, which increases their efficiency.

Not only do they meet the federal minimum energy efficiency standard, but they can be used with dimmers to cut down on energy costs even more.

Halogen incandescent bulbs also happen to be available in a number of different shapes and colors, thereby giving you plenty of options for your lighting needs.

Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFLs)

Compact fluorescent lamps are the compact versions of those long tube fluorescent lights that you typically see used in kitchens and garages.

They use much less energy than standard incandescent light bulbs and will pay for themselves within nine months of use. CFLs also use around 33 percent of the energy that a halogen incandescent light bulb uses.

If you go with CFLs, then look for those that are qualified by ENERGY STAR® – these not only use roughly 25 percent of the energy of a typical incandescent bulb, they also last around ten times as long.

Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs)

Light Emitting Diodes (or LEDs, for short) are solid-state lights that were once known mainly for their use as indicators and traffic lights. However, they have rapidly grown to become one of the most in-demand types of light bulbs due to their extreme efficiency and quality of light. LEDs provide a white light that is perfect for general illumination applications.

LEDs that have obtained the ENERGY STAR rating not only last upwards of 25 times longer than traditional incandescent light bulbs, they also use roughly 20 to 25 percent of the amount of energy that most traditional incandescent bulbs use.

If that wasn’t enough, LEDs also only use around 25 to 30 percent of the energy used by halogen incandescent bulbs and last between eight and 25 times as long.

It’s worth keeping in mind that LED lights are the most expensive by far – but the initial cost of an LED light is typically paid for by the amount of energy you save on a monthly basis – and the fact that they can last for upwards of 50,000 hours, or an average of roughly 12 hours a day for 11 years.
